Gist & Gossip

Mali Gist in Brief

  • Patrick Mboma of Cameroon’s thunderous volley against Congo Democratic Republic in the lions opening game is still on the bill for the goal of the tournament.

  • The Cameroonians made headlines with their jersey (A vest) though CAF approved the Top but neither any country nor club side in the history of the game has ever don anything like it.

  • The issue of prostitutes invading the Nigerian national team hotel is longer news, as it has always been the case. During the eagles qualifying matches for the world cup in Port Harcourt ladies besiege the players hotel rooms, with some of the players hooking up with their regular customers.

  • Malians are indeed soccer crazy, the president ordered all offices to close by 12:00pm so the people of Mali can turn up for the "eagles" matches, all shops were locked up before Mali’s 1:1 opening day draw with Liberia. The national flag were hoisted across the city of Bamako and it the soccer fever is still on from Bamako to sikassou.

  • George weah and James Debbah of Liberia has announced their intention of quitting the national team after the nation cup but LFA are persuading the latter to pick up the captains arm band so as to make him stay but the player says "no turning back". The decision of the two key players has left the entire team in disarray.

  • The stage is set for a Nigeria versus Cameroon finals all over again, if the reactions of the journalists in Mali are anything to go by.

  • Although the lions of Senegal are also tipped by bookmakers to cause a major upset but fears are rife that the lions of Teranga disciplinary performance may be their only obstacle, as Fadiga and Diouf are highly temperamental players whose actions on the field of play against the pharaohs of Egypt was obvious for all to see.

  • The lions of morocco are already feeling the absence of moustapha Hajji here in Mali as the entire national team though having their inspirational skipper, Nouroudeen Naybet and free scoring Abdeljelil Hadda appear to be missing the Aston Villa man who was not selected due to loss of form. But one thing is for sure; "No player can match HAJJI’S overhead kick of CAN 98" in the lions den.

  • The desert warriors of Algeria are really going to be a handful for security personnel’s in Mali, the north Africans are not in the good book of "well behaved fan" as they prove in their recent trip to saint Denis for a friendly game with the French side, the fans ran into the pitch to disrupt a game they were 4:1 behind! So watch out for the desert fans.

  • Burkina Faso coach stunned the continent when he included in the squad young, Winifred sanou who was a delight at the last U-17 world cup in Trinidad and Tobago, and the young star did not disappoint in the ETALONS opening 0:0 draw with South Africa on day two! Surely Sanou is a player on the lips of all now.

  • Nigeria remain the only country in MALI that came with the highest contingents and people here in Mali are hoping they won’t go home disappointed.
