Mother of Detainees

In September 1997, a charity organization for detainees began operation with the aims to give assistance to the hundreds of immigrants imprisoned in the UK. Here is an explanation of the circumstances behind the founder of DSHU - Detainees Support & Help Unit mission

Mrs. Comfort Afolabi

She has lived in the UK for nearly 20 years. Returning from one of her trips from Nigeria to UK, she ran into trouble with Immigration Officers, who promptly detained her soon after she claimed for asylum. She was locked up at Campsfield Detention Centre for four months, detached from her young children and separated from the world.

Life in detention was harsh and grim for her. She describes her time in the detention center as being worse than that of a prisoner. This is because a prisoner has a term to serve and can look forward to his/her freedom as at when due, but a detainee lives on fear, day in day out. Which often results to depression, and she talks about the fear of grown men leading them to tears.
At the end of her four months at the detention center she was given the opportunity to state her case to the Immigration Authorities who investigated her case. Eventually they granted her Indefinite Leave to remain in the country.

However, before her release she discovered that the State did not provide for the children or property of detainees. Indeed, neither they nor any other organisation catered for their every day needs. A detainee's welfare was limited to hand outs and the generosity of other inmates. Toiletries, combs, stamps, phone cards and other simple necessities were often luxuries to detainees. These are what urged her to pledge and start a campaign for the alleviation of detainees' suffered.
She knows from past experiences that being in detention is a grim experience. Which is why she has made a promise to do all in her power to be a voice for these voiceless people.
The Detainees Support & Help Unit has now been running successfully for four years and has since helped over 1000 detainees.
