HRH Oba Adeyinka Oyekan II

Oba of Lagos

Young Prince Adeyinka Oyekan ascended the throne as Oba of Lagos and occupied the Iga-idunganran Palace on February, 15 1965. Oba Adeyinka Oyekan is a man of destiny as his name implies Oyekan, because he had waited for sixteen years to become the king, due to the battle of kingship with the late Oba Adeniji Adele.

His Royal Highness Alayeluwa Oba Adeyinka Oyekan II, a peace loving, humble, God-fearing King, who has retained all the above mentioned qualities with the overwhelming burden of kingship.

He is a direct descendant of the Dosunmu royal family. His father, Prince Kusanu Abiola Oyekan was a school teacher of Christian faith and his mother Evangelist Omolara Oyekan was also a devout Christian.

Oba Oyekan attended Methodist Boys High School Lagos, Eko Boys High school and the prestigious Kings College Lagos. He later went to Yaba College of Technology where he studied Pharmacy and proceeded to Scotland for further studies in pharmacy. Oba Adeyinka Oyekan II is a fellow of the pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, the highest honour the Society can bestow on its members.

Oba Adeyinka Oyekan II is a devout Christian, a music lover whose dexterity on the piano is remarkable.

A staunch member of the Tinubu Methodist Church, where he was a member of the choir and Sunday school teacher. Oba Oyekan however as a good Christian, he does not allow his faith to, in any way, interfere with his traditional roles as His Highness still presides over traditional festivals such as the highly exclusive Oro and the popular Eyo festivals.

He is one of the few monarchs to have been received specially by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England. He is a Commander of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chairman Council of Obas and Chiefs of Lagos State, also a member of the National Council of States of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He is happily married to seven wives (Oloris) and over 30 children.

Having spent thirty-seven years on the throne of his fore fathers, he is certainly one of the longest reigning Oba in the history of Obaship in Lagos. At 92 years of age, his Grace and Wisdom to rule Lagos still wax stronger.

Long Live His Royal Highness!!
