The
programme kicked off with a welcome address by the present Capone
of NAS, Tim Amola Akpareva in which he reiterated some of the
aims and objectives of the association. According to him, NAS
is geared among others towards cultural, economical and charitable
development of people in Nigeria and in the United Kingdom. The
association also seeks to ensure there is a free and fair and
bloodless political election in Nigeria in 2003.

The
main attraction of the event was the informative and interesting
lecture delivered by Professor Femi Taiwo, an Associate Professor
of Philosophy and Global African Studies at Seattle University,
Seattle Washington, USA. Professor Taiwo in his lecture titled "Of
Intellectuals, Politics and Public policy-making in Nigeria"
challenged the role of intellectuals in Nigeria's political system.
Chief Emeka Anyaoku, who was the chairman of the occasion, commended
the lecture. The audience also had the opportunity to participate
during the Comments/Questions session, in which Dr Olu Agunloye,
the incumbent Minister of State for Defence in Nigeria who was the
Guest of Honour at the lecture stated that "change in mindset
and courage are needed for intellectuals so as to influence the
government and its policies." |

The
event was capped with response from the celebrant Professor
Wole Soyinka who equally commended Professor Taiwo's lecture
and expressed his appreciation to organisers of the event. Professor
Soyinka in his jovial mood shared an experience he had in an
American hotel a long time ago in which black people were not
allowed into some areas of the building. He threatened them
with lawsuits and the owner of the hotel had to be called in
to pacify him. Professor Soyinka ended his story with this hilarious
comment, "Reach for the pocket of the Americans and they
will listen".
